In a significant boost for the Northeast, Assam has emerged as the largest beneficiary of tax devolution, receiving Rs 5,573 crore from the central government. This substantial allocation is part of the broader distribution of Union taxes and duties for October 2024, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and public services across the region.
Following Assam, Arunachal Pradesh received Rs 3,131 crore, while other northeastern states also benefitted significantly: Meghalaya secured Rs 1,367 crore, Manipur got Rs 1,276 crore, Tripura received Rs 1,261 crore, Nagaland obtained Rs 1,014 crore, and Mizoram received Rs 891 crore.
Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed gratitude for this advance installment, highlighting its role in advancing Assam’s development goals through effective policy interventions and strategic projects.
While the northeastern states received noteworthy allocations, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with a staggering Rs 31,962 crore, followed by Bihar at Rs 17,921 crore. This tax devolution is crucial for state governments to implement vital development initiatives, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents.
